Nasrallah warned "all possibilities" were open in the fight against Israel [AFP]

Several rockets have been fired into northern Israel from neighbouring Lebanon, Israeli police say.

The suspected attacks on Thursday came after Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah, warned that "all possibilities" are open against Israel as he gave a fiery speech in which he blasted Israel's offensive in Gaza and voiced support for Hamas.

No injuries were immediately reported in the rocket fire, Israeli police said.

The Shia Muslim Hezbollah movement fought a month-long war with Israel in 2006 in which about 1,200 mostly Lebanese civilians were killed.

Lebanon is also home to thousands of Palestinian refugees.

Rula Amin, Al Jazeera's correspondent reporting from Beirut, said Lebanese security forces are confirming that "one or two rockets" have been fired from Lebanon intio Israel.

Jacky Rowland, reporting from southern Israel, said the firing of rockets from Lebanon is very significant.

"It could mean the opening of a second front," she said.

The rocket fire from Lebanon comes amid Israel's ongoing offensive in Gaza.

Nasrallah speech

Addressing tens of thousands of supporters via video link at his stronghold in Beirut's suburbs, Nasrallah said on Wednesday: "I say to [Ehud] Olmert [Israel's prime minister], the loser, the vanquished in Lebanon that 'you cannot overcome Hamas or Hezbollah'."

The comments marked the first time he has spoken so openly on the possibility of a renewed conflict with Israel since the war in Gaza began on December 27.

Nasrallah warned that the 2006 conflict would be "but a walk in the park" compared to what awaits Israel if it launches a new offensive on Lebanon.

"We have to act as though all possibilities are real and open [against Israel] and we must always be ready for any eventuality."

"We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in."

The Hezbollah leader also reiterated past criticism of Egypt for failing to open its border with Gaza and condemned the United Nation Security Council for not acting to denounce the Israeli offensive that has left more than 700 Palestinians dead.

"Does the government in Egypt need more than 650 victims and 2,500 wounded to open the Rafah crossing once and for all to help the people of Gaza toward victory?" Nasrallah said.

"I am simply asking for the opening of a crossing and not another front."

Israel resumes Gaza raid after lull

Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands more injured [Reuters]

Violence has escalated again in Gaza after Israel temporarily halted attacks in Gaza City in the north of the strip for three hours as a "humanitarian respite".

In the latest incident, an Israeli air raid on a car in Beit Lahia, near Gaza's northern border with Israel, killed three children and their father, who was described as a civilian by medical workers in the besieged strip.

The Israeli security cabinet, meanwhile, decided to postpone a vote on expanding its war in Gaza.

The third phase of its military campaign would entail moving deeper into populated area and risks much higher casualties, both for Israeli forces and for Palestinian civilians.

At least 697 Palestinians have died in Gaza since Israel began its assault on December 27, and that number continues to climb. About 3,085 people have also been wounded.

Seven Israeli soldiers and three civilians have died in the same period.

Temporary lull

Palestinians and aid workers in and around Gaza City had used Wednesday's respite to recover dead bodies, treat the wounded, and gather much-needed supplies in and around Gaza City.

Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, announced "offensive" military action across the strip would be suspended for three hours every alternating day, although the timings may very.

Despite this, Israeli air raids were reported on other parts of the Palestinian territory during Wednesday's announced timeframe of 1pm-4pm (11:00GMT).

Most of Wednesday's clashes occurred in northern Gaza, with explosions reported in Jabalya and Beit Lahia.

In Gaza City, four people were killed and seven injured outside a Mosque in the Sheik Radwan neighbourhood.

Two people were also killed earlier when the Zeitoun district was targeted from the air.

Further south, air raids hit the towns of Khan Younis and Rafah, where over 20 houses were destroyed.

No Israeli injuries have been reported on Wednesday after around eight rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel.

Civilian deaths

Israel is facing mounting pressure to agree a ceasefire after an attack on a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa) in the northern town of Jabaliya on Tuesday left 43 Palestinians dead and around 100 wounded.

Doctors said all the dead were either people sheltering in the school or residents of the nearby Jabalya refugee camp.

Israel claims missiles were fired from the UN building and that their troops were simply returning fire.

Around 15,000 Palestinians have had to flee the fighting so far, but have found few safe havens, as Israel and Egypt continue to largely keep border crossings shut.

Heba, a Gaza resident and mother of two, told Al Jazeera there was no place left in Gaza that can be considered safe.

"What happened in the school was a hugely offensive and inhumane thing. We never expected that people who sought refuge in a UN building would be attacked and killed," she said.

While earlier attempts to agree a ceasefire resolution at the UN have so far floundered, a French-Egypt proposal appears to be gaining some support.

The deal, which could include stationing international monitors at the Egyptian-Gaza border, has received qualified backing from the US and support from Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president and leader of Hamas-rival Fatah.

Arr: Gaza solidaritet
Mål: samla 10 000 personer
